Australia has taken another major step toward energy independence with the launch of the Cheaper Home Batteries Program. Officially rolling out in July 2025, this initiative is designed to make solar battery storage more affordable for households and small businesses.
Under this program, eligible participants can enjoy significant upfront savings on new battery installations. The savings apply to small-scale systems ranging between 5 kWh and 100 kWh, with rebates capped at 50 kWh. The rebate amount is automatically deducted when purchasing through accredited installers, eliminating the need for direct government applications.
The aim is simple: encourage more Australians to adopt solar storage, reduce dependence on the grid, and boost the use of renewable energy. Prior to this initiative, only a small fraction of solar homes had battery systems. With this financial support, battery installations are expected to increase significantly, contributing to national energy resilience.
To participate, homeowners must choose a certified installer and ensure that their system meets safety and product standards. The government has built this program with long-term sustainability in mind, meaning it will be adjusted over time as technology and uptake evolve.
For households planning to invest in solar or enhance existing systems, this is a valuable opportunity to reduce costs and future-proof their energy setup.
